Bridgewater Domestic Violence Lawyers: Domestic Violence and Brain Injury
Head injuries have made headlines lately as doctors discover the links between concussions sustained by professional football players and health issues that they develop later in life. Now the same link is being made by researchers at the Barrow Neurological Institute between traumatic brain injury (TBI) and victims of domestic violence.

Head injury is the most common form of domestic violence, and in a study published in July in the Journal of Neurotrauma, Dr. Glynnis Zieman found that 88 percent of victims interviewed for the study reported more than one head injury and 81 percent reported injuries too numerous to count. As in sports, the effects of repetitive brain injuries are cumulative, leading to chronic illnesses with devastating consequences. The Barrow Concussion and Brain Injury Center identified the relationship between domestic violence, TBI, and homelessness as it worked with survivors who had lost jobs and income due to their injuries. As a result of the study, Barrow developed a unique program that provides both medical care and social services to victims of domestic violence who have suffered a TBI and become homeless.

Treatment, Shelters Are an Imperative for Victims of Domestic Violence

Besides further research into the topic, one of Barrow’s goals is expanding brain injury awareness. There are very real consequences to TBI from domestic violence and women do not have to suffer them in silence. The program aims to have treatment more readily available to victims both in and out of shelters so that they receive the care they need. Dr. Zieman points out that their patients are not well paid football players and do not have the support, money, and other resources they need to obtain help.
